FI - IR extension

Course description

The FI - IR extension rating is a theoretical and practical training course designed to provide the methods for teaching the instructor rating.

The candidate must be able to teach the practical skills required for a student to pass the instrument rating.

During the course the candidate will develop the skills required teach in flight and on the ground in classrooms or on simulators.

Entry requirements

In order to begin the course the candidate must be 18 years old, have successfully passed a simulator assessment and hold :

  • A CPL with a valid SEP or MEP,
  • An FI rating (for holders of other instructor ratings the training time is doubled),
  • At least 200 hours of IFR flight with a maximum of 50 hours on FNPT2 or flight simulator.


Detailed description

The training will be done over a 3 week course or 2 weeks for those candidates already holding a FI(A) rating.

The course is divided into three parts:

  1. Part - Teaching: 25 hours of teaching methods (FI holders are exempt)
  2. Part - Theoretical knowledge: 20 hours to develop teaching ability.
  3. Part - Flight training: 8 hours of flight instruction on FPNT II and 2 hours on the aircraft.

At the end of training a certificate of completion will be issued.

Diplomas and examinations

The licencing service will issue the IR extension upon production of the certificate of completion.
